Children's Future Society (CFS) is a Non-profit Organization founded by Dorothy Nikoma, a 23-year-old visionary, after comprehensive research revealed the urgent need to support children made vulnerable by the imprisonment of their parents or guardians.
In Africa, particularly in third world countries like Zambia, acute poverty has been the major barrier against human development and access to education. This has caused excessive increases in crime rates, substance abuse, and early child marriages. The most vulnerable are children who are hopelessly left by their incarcerated guardians with no one to support and develop their capabilities through education.
According to the 2017 Zambia Correctional Services Annual Report, there were about 25,000 inmates nationwide, with 70% being youths without proper education, 85% involved in poverty-related offenses, and 69% leaving behind more than one child at the time of arrest. This means Zambia had more than 25,000 vulnerable children who deserve special care, especially the right to education, health, and shelter.
Children's Future Society does not look at a child of an incarcerated guardian as a prisoner; but rather strives to improve the wellbeing of such children through provision of basic care, especially education and life skills.
